Park Ji-Sung Joins QPR

The Queens Park Rangers signed former Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-Sung Monday to a two-year deal for an undisclosed amount.

The transfer was reported Monday on the team’s website and during a press conference held at Loftus Road.

Park, who played for seven seasons at Old Trafford, joins Ryan Nelsen, Andy Johnson, Rob Green, Samba Diakite and former Old Trafford teammate Fabio at Loftus Road. Park helped Manchester United to four Premier League titles as well as the Champions League, making more than 200 appearances and scoring 27 goals.

Park told the assembled media ranks: “Their plan is great. I couldn’t resist this plan and ambition. I know QPR want to improve and have ambitions to reach the next level and I will try my best to help. There were other offers but nothing compared to QPR.

“It was a difficult decision (to leave Manchester United). It is time for a new challenge and I think it’s a great decision so that both me and the club can progress.

“They want to be a bigger club and that ambition for me is a great challenge. They have great players and they are still hungry to get to the next level, to me that is very important.”

Manager Mark Hughes added: “On a football level Ji is someone I have admired from afar for years. He wore the red shirt of Manchester United in a distinguished way and he will bring a great deal to the team, I can’t wait to start working with him.

“Ji is a motivated guy, he feels there is success ahead of him, he ticks every box. It’s a very exciting time for QPR. I said at the end of the season we didn’t want to be in the same position next season and I stand by that, we are in a better place now.”

“Every report we have had about his footballing ability and his demeanor of a person put him top of the pile. “It’s a really significant signing for us as a club and for me as a manager. It will really help us get to where we want to be.”

이젠 더 이상 ‘맨체스터 유나이티드(이하 맨유)의 산소탱크’가 아니다. 이제는 ‘퀸스 파크 레인저스(이하 QPR)의 산소탱크’라고 불러야 한다.

박지성은 2005년 한국인 최초로 맨유에 입단했고, 현재까지 잉글랜드 프로축구 무대에 진출한 아시아 선수 중 가장 큰 성공을 거둔 장본인이다.

박지성은 이번 여름 휴가 기간 한국에서 시간을 보내는 중에도 수 차례 맨유에서 은퇴하고 싶다는 의사를 밝혔다. 하지만 본인 역시 “모든 상황이 맞아야 가능하다”며 전제 조건을 달았다. 결국 박지성은 잉글랜드 프리미어리그에서의 여덟 번 째 시즌을 앞두고 맨체스터를 떠나 런던으로 향했다. 

박지성의 에이전트인 JS리미티드측은 “사실 잉글랜드 프리미어리그 팀 뿐만 아니라 유럽 다른 리그의 팀들에서도 제의가 있었다”며 이번 여름 이적 시장을 통해 복수의 클럽에서 러브콜을 받았음을 시사했다. 

결정은 박지성의 몫이었다. 맨유에서 날로 치열해지는 주전 경쟁에서 어떤 것 보다 실전 소화를 중요시했던 박지성은 과감하게 이적을 결정했다. QPR을 택한 이유는 간단하다. 주전 보장률이 높을 뿐만 아니라 지난 일곱 시즌 동안 활약한 EPL에 대한 자신감 떄문이다.

JS리미티드측은 “잉글랜드에서 일곱 시즌을 보냈다. 이제 여덟 번째 시즌을 앞두고 있다”며 “언어부터 새롭게 배워야 하는 상황 보다는 언어도 이미 문제가 없고, 환경 적응에도 큰 문제가 없는 팀을 택했다”며 QPR을 선택한 배경을 설명했다.

QPR의 연고지인 런던은 맨유의 연고지인 맨체스터와 비교하면 상당한 대도시다. 하지만 언어적으로 발음의 미세한 차이 외에는 전혀 어려움이 없으며, 생활 환경 역시 대도시와 중소도시의 보편적 차이 외에는 큰 차이가 없다. 교통 체증이나 부동산 시세 등은 맨체스터가 유리하지만, 한국으로의 이동이나 한국 식료품 등 다양한 생필품의 조달은 런던이 수월하다. 

현지 복수 매체의 보도에 의하면 박지성은 이미 QPR 이적에 동의했으며, 9일 QPR과의 기자회견이 예정되어 있다. 박지성의 QPR 데뷔 무대는 오는 8월 18일, 스완지 시티와의 홈 경기다. ‘친정’ 맨유와의 대결은 11월 24일이다.
